Zequinha de Abreu (1880-1935)

Perhaps the most unlikely addition to this website is the Brazilian composer Zequinha de Abreu. One wonders if he ever even heard traditional Irish music!
Nonetheless his famous tune Tico Tico has entered the Irish tradition ever since Altan's accordionist Demort Byrne turned it into a kind of reel and recorded it for his self-titled debut album.
Many Irish musicians have since learnt the tune as a result of Byrne's infectious recording of it with Steve Cooney on guitar.
Below are some youtube clips of three unique performances of the tune.
The first is Dermot Byrne, Steve Cooney, Frankie Gavin and Carl Hession.
The second is the great Spanish guitarist Paco De Lucia.
And finally we have The Muppets! (It starts 2.40 into the clip)
