Diarmaid Moynihan
Uilleann piper Moynihan has become one of the most prolific and recorded composers of his generation.
He was a member of the band Calico, who recorded many of his tunes.
His tunes have since gained international exposure through bands like Flook and Lúnasa, who have recorded several of them including The Malbay Shuffle and The Waterbed.

Diarmaid is acknowledged as one of Ireland’s foremost uilleann pipers and composers. His music has been recorded by some of traditional music’s finest musicians including Lunasa, Flook, Michael McGoldrick, Gráda, Karen Tweed, Kathryn Tickell and Kris Drever.
A former winner of both the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil and the Oireachtas he was a founder member of the groundbreaking band, Calico in the mid 1990’s and the band’s debut album, Celanova Square won the Best New Album Award at the inaugural Irish Music Magazine Awards in 1998. Two years later Calico released, Songdogs, which won a Bravos Commendation from the French Music Press. The band toured regularly throughout Europe and the USA appearing at many of the major music festivals.
He has toured extensively with the Belfast based band Craobh Rua and now regularly appears in concert with Bristol based jazz outfit Carmina, with whom he has finished recording most recent album, My Crescent City produced by Donal Lunny. He has appeared in concert with Galician gaita maestro Anxo Lorenzo, Flook, Guidewires and Breton legend Alain Stivell among many others.
His music has featured on numerous programmes on TG4, BBC, RTE and Lyric FM and has been included in a number of manuscript publications. He is also a highly respected teacher and he has given master-classes in Italy, the USA, Germany, Finland and Australia and has taught at University College Cork, University of Limerick and The Cork School of Music.
He is now based in Castlebar, Co. Mayo where he has recently appeared in concert with award winning writers Terry McDonagh, Sean Lysaght, Louis de Paor and Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill.
