About this website
This website is dedicated to celebrating the great composers of traditional Irish music. Many people don't realise that a large amount of the traditional Irish tunes commonly played were composed by known composers, many of them in the 20th Century and even more recently.
We intend to include any known composer who has made a lasting impact on the tradition. You can make a lasting impact with a whole body of work or even just one tune.
In order to qualify for inclusion the composer must meet one of these three criteria
(a) The composer has one or more tunes which are now part of the standard repertoire
(b) The composer has one or more tunes which have been played by musicians of note
(c) The composer or someone else has produced a collection of their music in printed form
The composers are listed in two ways; Alphabetically and Geographically according to where they were born. Click on the Alphabetical or Geographical lists on the top left corner to see the composers. Composers who have their names in blue and underlined have pages created for them. Other composers have not yet had pages created.
Composers with three stars beside their name are generally recognised for having a large body of tunes, some of which are in the regular repertoire. In addition composers with a + sign beside their name have had their music published in book form.
